Why Level 2 Is Right for Your Home

A standard 120V outlet (Level 1) adds roughly 4–5 miles of range per hour β€” too slow for daily driving. A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240V circuit delivers 20–35 miles per hour, fully charging most EVs overnight.

AMY Electric installs all major Level 2 chargers and NEMA 14-50 outlets. As an EVITP-certified contractor (#4051604), we're trained specifically in EV infrastructure β€” from load calculations and circuit sizing to LADWP interconnection requirements.

How the Installation Process Works

1
Free Estimate & Site Evaluation

We assess your panel, garage layout, and circuit capacity. We'll tell you exactly what's needed and what it costs β€” before any work begins.

2
Permit Application

We pull the required electrical permit from the City of LA (LADBS) or applicable jurisdiction. No permit = no inspection = potential liability for you. We handle this.

3
Installation Day (2–4 Hours)

We run the dedicated circuit, mount the charger or NEMA outlet, label the breaker, and test the system fully before we leave.

4
Inspection & Sign-Off

We schedule and attend the inspection. Once signed off, you're done β€” and protected.

Rebates & Incentives in Los Angeles

πŸ’‘ LA residents may qualify for significant EV charger rebates that can offset 50–100% of installation cost.
  • LADWP Residential EV Charger Rebate β€” Up to $500 for qualifying LADWP customers installing a Level 2 charger.
  • CALeVIP β€” California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project offers rebates for charger hardware and installation at qualifying sites.
  • Federal Tax Credit (Section 30C) β€” 30% of the cost of EV charging equipment (up to $1,000 for residential, more for commercial). Consult your tax advisor.

As a CALeVIP-listed contractor, AMY Electric can help you identify and apply for applicable programs.

Our EV Charger Installation Process

1. Free On-Site Evaluation

We visit your home to assess your electrical panel capacity, existing 240V availability, wall condition, and distance from the panel. This 30-minute inspection determines whether we can use existing service or need a panel upgrade. You receive a written estimate with no obligation.

2. Quote & Scheduling

You receive a detailed written estimate breaking down charger unit cost (if needed), installation labor, permitting fees, and any electrical upgrades. Typical timeline: 2-4 weeks from contract to final inspection sign-off. We work around your schedule.

3. Permit Submission

We handle all paperwork with LADBS and LADWP β€” permit applications, electrical plans, and coordination. Typical permit turnaround: 5-10 business days. You don't need to do anything during this step.

4. Installation (1-2 Days)

Our electricians run the 240V circuit from your breaker panel to the charger location, mount the charger, connect the circuit, install weatherproof covers, and perform all safety tests β€” continuity, resistance, and voltage drop verification. Every installation meets NEC Article 625 requirements.

5. Final Inspection & Sign-Off

LADBS or LADWP inspector verifies the installation. We coordinate scheduling and attend the inspection. Once approved, you receive the Certificate of Completion β€” required for warranty claims and future home sales.

EV Charger Installation FAQ

How long does EV charger installation take? β–Ύ
Most residential Level 2 installations take 2–4 hours. If a panel upgrade is also needed, plan for a full day.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger? β–Ύ
Not always. We perform a free load calculation to determine if your existing panel can support a dedicated 40A or 50A circuit. Many homes can add a charger without a panel upgrade.
Are there rebates for EV charger installation in LA? β–Ύ
Yes. LADWP offers up to $500 for residential customers. CALeVIP provides additional incentives for qualifying installations. The federal Section 30C tax credit covers 30% of equipment cost. We can help you identify what you qualify for.
Do you install chargers in apartments or condos? β–Ύ
Yes β€” in dedicated parking spots or garages where the tenant or HOA has approval. California law (AB 2565) gives tenants the right to install EV chargers in most cases. We've handled many MUD installations.
Do you handle the permit? β–Ύ
Yes β€” we pull all required permits and schedule inspections. A permit is required for all new EV charger circuits in LA, and it protects you from liability and future sale complications.
