LA Homes Need Whole-Home Surge Protection

Southern California experiences frequent power surges from grid switching (especially during fire season PSPS events), utility faults, and lightning strikes. Surges enter through your main panel and can damage every connected device in your home β€” including expensive EV chargers, HVAC systems, and smart home equipment.

⚑

Type 1 Surge Protective Device (SPD)

Installed at the main panel. Protects your entire home from external surges entering through the utility feed. Required by 2023 NEC for all new service installations.

πŸ”Œ

Type 2 SPD (Sub-Panel)

Installed at a sub-panel or dedicated equipment panel. Adds a second layer of protection for EV chargers, hot tubs, pool equipment, and sub-panel feeds.

πŸ”‹

EV Charger Surge Protection

Tesla Wall Connectors and other EV chargers are sensitive electronics. A Type 2 SPD at the EV sub-panel protects your charger investment β€” especially important with LA's grid fluctuations.

🏒

Commercial Surge Protection

Protect expensive commercial equipment, POS systems, IT infrastructure, and HVAC from surge damage. Essential for retail, offices, and restaurants.

πŸ“Ί

Point-of-Use Surge Protectors

High-quality power strip-style protectors for home theater, home office, and entertainment centers. We recommend and can install Leviton or similar UL-listed units.

πŸ”

Surge Protection Audit

We evaluate your current surge protection level, identify vulnerable equipment, and recommend the right combination of Type 1, Type 2, and point-of-use protection.

Surge Protection Is Now Code in California

The 2023 National Electrical Code (adopted in California) requires Type 1 or Type 2 surge protection on all new residential electrical services. If you're upgrading your panel or adding a new circuit, adding a whole-home SPD is a smart β€” and increasingly required β€” investment.

Surge Protection Costs

ServiceTypical Range
Type 1 SPD (main panel, 200A)$250–$500
Type 2 SPD (sub-panel)$200–$400
EV Charger + Type 2 SPD (bundle)$450–$900
Panel Upgrade + SPD (bundle)$2,700–$4,800
Commercial SPD (3-phase)$500–$1,500

SPD device included in price. Brands used: Leviton, Siemens, Eaton. 10-year warranty on most units.

Surge Protection FAQ

What's the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 surge protection? β–Ύ
Type 1 SPDs are installed at the main service panel and protect against external surges from the utility. Type 2 SPDs are installed at sub-panels or branch panels and protect against both external surges and internal surges from large appliances cycling on and off. For best protection, use both.
Isn't a power strip enough? β–Ύ
No β€” a basic power strip only protects the few devices plugged into it. A whole-home SPD protects everything connected to your electrical panel: HVAC, refrigerator, EV charger, well pump, pool equipment, security system, and all outlets and hardwired devices.
Do I need surge protection with a new panel upgrade? β–Ύ
Not always. We perform a free load calculation to determine if your existing panel can support a new circuit. Many homes can add a single EV charger or appliance without a panel upgrade if they have 200A service and available breaker slots. Older homes with 100A service typically need an upgrade to 200A. Factors include your current electrical load, the new circuit requirements, and local code requirements. We inspect at no cost and let you know before providing a final quote.
How long do surge protectors last? β–Ύ
Panel-mounted SPDs typically last 5-10 years depending on surge frequency. Most units have a visible indicator light or alarm that tells you when protection is depleted. We install only UL 1449 4th Edition listed devices.
Will a surge protector save my electronics from lightning? β–Ύ
A direct lightning strike requires a dedicated lightning protection system. However, the majority of surge damage comes from nearby strikes, utility grid switching, and internal load cycling β€” all of which a Type 1 + Type 2 SPD system handles effectively.
