How to Choose the Right
EV Charger for Your LA Home
Buying an EV charger isn't just about the brand on the box. The right choice depends on your home's electrical capacity, your driving habits, and the rebates available to Los Angeles residents.

How to Choose the Right EV Charger for Your LA Home
With dozens of Level 2 chargers on the market, picking the right one comes down to three things: your panel's available amperage, how fast you want to charge, and whether you want smart features. Here's how Los Angeles homeowners should think about it.
Match Amperage to Your Panel
Most homes install a 40-amp or 48-amp Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240V circuit. If your panel is already near capacity, a 200-amp upgrade may be needed first. We size the circuit to your panel, not the other way around.
Hardwired vs. Plug-In
Hardwired chargers are cleaner and code-preferred for outdoor installs. NEMA 14-50 plug-in units are portable but generate more heat at the receptacle. For a permanent LA garage install, hardwired is the safer choice.
Smart Features Worth It
Wi-Fi scheduling lets you charge during LADWP off-peak hours (cheaper). Look for energy reporting, load sharing between two cars, and OCPP compatibility if you want future-proofing.
Rebate Compatibility
The LADWP rebate and federal 30C tax credit apply to most ENERGY STAR chargers. We provide the paperwork and model numbers so your rebate goes through cleanly.
Chargers We Install Most in Los Angeles
Best All-Round
Hardwired 48-amp units from established brands (ChargePoint, Enphase, Tesla Universal) deliver 11 kW and handle two-EV households with load sharing.
Best Budget
A 32-amp hardwired charger adds ~25 miles of range per hour - plenty for most commuters at a lower equipment cost.
Best for Apartments
Plug-in 240V units with a lockable enclosure work where the homeowner can't modify shared infrastructure.
