When to Choose 200A Over 100A

A 200A panel costs more upfront but eliminates the need for a second upgrade when your electrical needs grow. Choose 200A if your home has any of the following:

EV Charger or Solar

Level 2 EV chargers draw 30–50A. Solar systems backfeed 30–60A. Both require the headroom only 200A provides.

Home Over 1,500 sq ft

Larger homes have more circuits — lighting, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, garage, outdoor — that push a 100A panel to its limit.

Modern Appliances

Heat pumps, induction ranges, tankless water heaters, and jacuzzis each add 30–60A. A 200A panel gives you room for all of them.

Frequent Breaker Trips

If your main breaker trips regularly when running normal appliances, your 100A panel is overloaded and needs upgrading.

100A Is Still Fine for Some Homes

If your current 100A panel is functioning well and passes a load calculation, a like-for-like replacement may be the right call — especially for:

  • Condos and apartments — Most have dedicated 100A service per unit and cannot physically upgrade to 200A without building-wide service changes.
  • Small homes under 1,200 sq ft — If gas appliances are used and there are no plans for EV charging or major additions, 100A provides adequate capacity.
  • Budget-constrained upgrades — If a failing panel needs immediate replacement and budget is limited, a 100A replacement is $1,000–$2,000 less than 200A. Future upgrades are always possible.

100A vs 200A Panel FAQ

Can I upgrade from 100A to 200A without rewiring my entire house?
Yes. The upgrade replaces the service entrance cable, meter base, main panel, and main breaker. Existing branch circuits stay connected. Your interior wiring does not need to be replaced unless it's damaged or undersized.
Does Los Angeles building code require 200A panels?
The 2022 California Electrical Code does not mandate 200A for all homes. New homes over 2,000 sq ft typically require 200A. For existing homes, 100A is code-compliant if it passes a load calculation. Most homeowners choose 200A for future capacity — especially if adding EV charging or modern appliances.
Is 200A worth the extra cost?
For most single-family homes in LA, yes. The $1,000–$2,000 premium over a 100A replacement pays for itself when you eventually add an EV charger, solar, or heat pump. Upgrading twice costs more than doing 200A once.
Can I install an EV charger with a 100A panel?
It depends on your current load. We perform a free load calculation to check. If you have gas appliances and moderate loads, a 100A panel can often handle a Level 2 charger. If your panel is near capacity, a 200A upgrade or load management device may be needed.
Will a bigger panel increase my electric bill?
No. Panel amperage does not affect energy consumption. You pay only for the electricity you use. A 200A panel simply gives you the capacity to use more electricity — you don't consume more unless you add devices.
Does AMY Electric handle LADWP coordination?
Yes. We handle the entire process — permit application with LADBS, service upgrade request with LADWP, meter pull scheduling, installation, and final inspection. You don't need to call any city agency.
