When You Need More Circuits Without a Full Panel Upgrade

A subpanel gives you additional breaker spaces and dedicated circuits by drawing power from your existing main panel. It's the most cost-effective way to add capacity for:

🏠 ADUs & Additions

Accessory dwelling units, in-law suites, and room additions need their own circuits. A 100A or 200A subpanel handles the load.

🔌 EV Charger Circuits

Level 2 EV chargers need a dedicated 240V circuit. If your main panel is full, a subpanel provides the space without a full upgrade.

🔧 Workshops & Garages

Power tools, air compressors, and workshop equipment need 240V circuits. A subpanel in the garage keeps everything organized.

☀️ Solar & Battery Backup

Solar installations and battery backup systems often require a subpanel for proper isolation and load management.

How We Install Your Subpanel

01

Load Assessment

We calculate your total electrical load and determine the right subpanel size. Most ADUs need 100A; workshops may need 60A-100A.

02

Feeder Sizing

We size the feeder wire from your main panel to the subpanel based on amperage and distance. Proper sizing prevents voltage drop.

03

Installation

We mount the subpanel, run the feeder from the main panel, install breakers, and ensure proper grounding and bonding.

04

Inspection

LADBS inspects the installation. You receive a signed permit and certificate for your records and any future home sale.

Subpanel Installation FAQ

What is a subpanel and when do I need one? +

A subpanel is a secondary electrical panel that receives power from your main panel via a feeder circuit. You need one when your main panel is full, when adding an ADU or home addition, or when you need dedicated circuits in a detached garage or workshop that are too far from the main panel.

How much does subpanel installation cost in Los Angeles? +

Cost depends on the amperage, location, and feeder wire length. A 60A subpanel in a garage runs $1,200-$2,500. A 100A subpanel for an ADU is $2,500-$4,500. A 200A subpanel with new feeder from the main panel is $4,000-$7,000. All estimates include permits and inspection.

What size subpanel do I need for an ADU? +

Most ADUs require a 100-amp subpanel to handle the kitchen, HVAC, water heater, and general circuits. If the ADU has electric heating or a heat pump, a 200-amp subpanel may be recommended. We calculate the load during your free estimate.

Do I need to upgrade my main panel for a subpanel? +

Not always. If your main panel has available breaker spaces and sufficient capacity, we can add a feeder breaker directly. If the panel is full or lacks capacity, we may recommend a panel upgrade first. We assess your main panel during the estimate.

How long does subpanel installation take? +

Most subpanel installations take 1-2 days. This includes running the feeder wire, mounting the panel, installing breakers, and connecting to the main panel. ADU subpanels with long feeder runs may take 2-3 days.
